Requesting an urgent tax refund for people leaving New Zealand
If you are leaving New Zealand permanently or for more than 325 days you can request an urgent income tax refund form the Inland Revenue Department.
What you will need to supply us with:
Arrival date (if applicable) and departure date to and from New Zealand
A copy of your tickets or a travel agents itinerary and proof of payment
Your overseas address
Reason for leaving New Zealand (eg returning home, emigrating)
Your New Zealand Bank Account details (if you would like us to direct credit your tax refund to you.)
Note: We can only direct credit to New Zealand bank account
Your New Zealand Residency Status
A New Zealand resident is anyone who:
Is in New Zealand for more than 183 days in any 12 months, or
Has an "enduring relationship" with New Zealand.
A person becomes a non-resident if they:
Are away from New Zealand for more than 325 days in any 12 months, and
Don't have an "enduring relationship" with New Zealand.
An "enduring relationship" with New Zealand covers presence in New Zealand, accommodation, social and economic ties, employment or business, personal property, intentions, benefits and pensions.
